The RAeS Boscombe Down Branch invites you to attend the following online lecture: Flight Simulation at Warton – Past Success & Present Challenges by Dr Steve Hodge BEng(Hons) CEng FRAeS MIET (BAE Systems)
Tuesday 4th January 2022 – 17:30 GMT
Synopsis:
Flight Simulation at Warton: Past Success & Present Challenges
In our first lecture event of 2022, Dr Steve Hodge will give an overview of the history and impact of flight simulation from the earliest days of flight, through to the advent of the world’s first useful flight training simulator, the Link Trainer. The focus will then shift to the use of simulation as part of the Engineering process applied to the design, development and clearance of combat aircraft and its original application by BAE Systems and its predecessor companies at Warton. Finally, the story will be brought up-to-date by taking a detailed look at how modelling and simulation is being used to support the integration of the F-35B Lightning II aircraft with the UK’s Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.
Biography:
Dr Steve Hodge BEng(Hons) CEng FRAeS MIET
Licensed Technologist Air – Simulation, BAE Systems
Steve first encountered the world of flight simulation during an industrial placement at BAE Systems. He was fascinated by what he saw and after graduating (from The University of Central Lancashire in Preston) with a degree in Electronic Engineering, he joined the Simulation Department at Warton.
During his career, Steve has worked on modelling and simulation for research and operational aircraft such as Hawk and Harrier. His involvement with the UK carrier program began in the late 90’s during the CVF assessment phase. In 2004, motivated by a lack of available solutions for modelling the aircraft-ship interface, Steve began a part-time PhD on the subject at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 2010. Since then, Steve has been primarily involved in modelling and simulation of the F-35 / QEC aircraft-ship interface, which is the subject of his talk today.
Steve is a BAE Systems Global Engineering Fellow, a Licensed Technologist, an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Flight Simulation Specialist.
Please Note: This lecture event has concluded and at the speaker’s request, the recording of the lecture will NOT be published on our website or the RAeS YouTube channel.
