The Royal International Air Tattoo - from small be The Royal International Air Tattoo - from small beginnings ~ by Tim Prince

The RAeS Boscombe Down branch is delighted to welcome Tim Prince OBE FRAeS on the 23rd Feb to share his amazing story as a major airshow organiser, instrumental in the running of numerous shows and co-founding the Royal International Air Tattoo. In a time when airshows seem increasingly threatened, we’re really excited to hear how Tim helped shape RIAT into the phenomenal success that it is.

Son of a rose grower and a ballet teacher, Tim Prince has been a member of the Royal International Air Tattoo [RIAT] and instrumental in its development since it was established 1971, retiring as CEO and of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises in 2014.

Turned down by the RAF he joined the DoT, then the CAA, as an Air Traffic Controller 1967-78 at A&AEE Boscombe Down, holding all ATC licences and a PPL. He was instrumental in the staging of air events at North Weald, Goodwood, Greenham Common, Middle Wallop, Hurn, South Cerney [WAC], Brands Hatch [F1 GPs], Fairford, Cottesmore, Boscombe Down, Sunderland, East Fortune, Filton, Heathrow and the Eurotunnel opening; and has advised numerous overseas countries on the planning of major air events.

A founder member and Trustee of the RIAT Flying Scholarships for Disabled People – in memory of Sir Douglas Bader, made OBE in 2009, RAeS Fellow and an HCAP Liveryman in 2010, Tim now holds positions as an RIAT Vice-Patron [Hon] and an FSDP Vice-Patron. He is a member of the British Air Display Association and the European Airshow Council.
If you would like to attend, please email your title, full name, and nationality to the branch at boscombedown@aerosociety.com so we can arrange security passes.

31st January ~ Lecture: Battle of Britain ~ The Making of the Movie by Phil Holt

Filling in for David Eagles lecture, we're delighted to announce that Phil Holt will be presenting to us next Tuesday.

2019 saw the 50th anniversary of this fabulous film’s premiere. Sandwiched between clunky wooden models and CGI, this was the first (and to date only) film to tell the full story of the Battle. Producers Ben Fitz and Harry Saltzman wanted it to be big screen. The 2 air forces formed to fight it out for the Panavision cameras constituted, when combined, the 35th largest in the world! Using photos, footage & stories from those who flew for the fil, Phil Holt tells the behind the scenes story of how it was all done, from restoration to pyrotechnics, locations to dogfight planning.

‘Some Memories of an Aviation Career’ ~ David Eagles

For our first lecture of 2023, David Eagles, ex-Boscombe Down & ETPS Test Pilot and former CTP at BAE Warton, will reflect on some of the aircraft that he experienced during a flying career spanning almost 35 years from 1953 to 1987. These range from the Harvard to the EAP, as well as flying training with the USN, flying with the RAN and the RN, time at Boscombe Down, and finally flying at BAE Warton.

Check out our website for details on how to register your attendance (it's free but we need to sort out security passes before you arrive!) and to read more about David's hugely impressive career background.

On Wednesday 7th December, nine members of the bra On Wednesday 7th December, nine members of the branch gathered at a very chilly Cotswold Airport (formerly Kemble) to visit the hydrogen-electric aircraft developer, ZeroAvia. We were treated to a fascinating presentation by resident test pilot, Jon Killerby, and hydrogen powertrain expert, Aajay Sankar, before embarking on a tour of their hangar to see their latest creation – a Dornier 228 technology demonstrator, converted to run on electricity generated from hydrogen fuel cells. All would agree that it was an amazing chance to see some of the latest developments towards sustainable aviation, and we’re looking forwards to hearing good news about the upcoming test flight! Thank you very much to @ZeroAvia and all involved for making it a great visit!
