“Safety Is No Accident” – A Flight Test Engineer’s Story by John R W Smith (CAA, Retd)
John’s talk will discuss his flight test experiences with an emphasis on safety issues. He will cover his time at Avro when involved in the later Avro Vulcan developments, the Avro/HS748 variants, the Nimrod and the Victor tanker. Later, at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in his ‘poacher-turned-gamekeeper’ role, John will discuss his involvement in the certification flight testing of a large range of civil aircraft types from single engine light aircraft to Concorde, that included many foreign aeroplane types from Europe, USA and Brazil. The message that ‘flight testing can still be dangerous’ will be illustrated by examples of fatal accidents which involved John’s colleagues and friends.
