P-8A Poseidon – Delivering the Maritime Patrol Aircraft by Group Captain Simon Joy |
7th May 2019
Synopsis |
The UK has been left without an organic fixed wing Maritime Patrol Aircraft capability since the withdrawal from RAF service of the Nimrod MR2 and the cancellation of the Nimrod MRA4 in 2010. This lecture will examine the justification for a Maritime Patrol Aircraft and the process that led to the decision to procure the P-8A Poseidon aircraft at the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review. This lecture will review the challenges of introducing the capability, including delivering the equipment, the approach to airworthiness and safety, the infrastructure, training and the potential wider benefits that come from such an investment. As the UK takes delivery of the first aircraft in 2019, the speaker will summarise the current programme status and preparedness for the Introduction to Service of the capability |
