RAeS Evening Lecture
Aerial Archaeology – Dr Martin Kellett
Flying is a wonderful way to travel, but the view from the air can reveal amazing things that just aren’t visible when we’re standing on the Earth. Archaeologists have used this fact for many years to discover features of our historical landscape.
Previously-hidden features such as neolithic monuments, roman camps and medieval field systems can magically reveal themselves through phenomena such as parch marks during droughts, soil marks and crop shadows. Martin Kellett will describe the methods and the magic of aerial archaeology and show some of the amazing finds in our archaeological landscape.
Dr Martin Kellett is an aeronautical engineer who is also a light aircraft pilot with a passion for archaeology. He has flown and photographed much of the Wessex landscape and has been the project pilot for a number of historic landscape research projects.
