RAeS Evening Lecture
The Origins & History of the Royal Aeronautical Society
– Air Cdr Bill Tyack CBE FRAeS
Bill Tyack was a navigator in the Royal Air Force for 37 years, retiring in 1999. He flew operationally in Shackleton, Nimrod and Canberra aircraft during the Cold War, and spent four years flying trials at Boscombe Down.
He commanded No 51 Squadron and RAF Wyton. He also flew several desks in the Ministry of Defence. After retiring from the RAF he spent six years in QinetiQ, but has been on a career break since 2006.
He spent some of that time flying small aircraft, but has thought it prudent to hang up his flying boots. He was President of the RAeS for 2014/2015.
The lecture describes the origins and history of the Royal Aeronautical Society, focusing on the people and events that led to its formation 150 years ago.
It covers the personalities and activities of the early years and the impact that the Society had on the development of aviation, before briefly bringing the story of the Society up to date. Much of the material for the lecture has been drawn from the Society’s archives in the National Aerospace Library.
