Force support helicopter fleet since it was introduced to service in 1980. Its flexibility and lift capability has met the changing needs of UK defence during the transition from the Cold War, to the asymmetric threats of the post 9/11 world. As the operating environments have evolved, so has the Chinook.
This lecture will provide an overview of the Chinook’s service and the new capabilities that are being delivered to the frontline to enhance the safety and effectiveness of the UK armed forces. The lecture will review the test programme for the new Mk6 Chinook and the growing UK support base that Boeing provides to the RAF.
The speaker will conclude with an overview of the upgrading work to get the UK Chinook fleet to a common standard and the platform’s continuing evolution to meet the needs of the operational users. This will ensure that the Chinook remains the support helicopter of choice for use in the most demanding operating environments.
